Our approach to informing the public is straightforward. Students and faculty volunteer as designated contacts. When a highly debated topic emerges, we send a concise survey to the contact person, accompanied by a brief explanation of which research fields are best suited to address the questions. The contact person then forwards the survey to the most appropriate researcher within their university.
The surveys are designed to be concise and user-friendly, taking only a few minutes to complete. Their purpose is not to delve into scientific details, but to provide the public with a general understanding of scientists' perspectives on specific subjects, allowing people to grasp where the scientific consensus lies.
Controversial topics that come to mind include COVID-19 and its vaccines, where people may be uncertain about distinguishing genuine science from misinformation, as well as issues like climate change and genome editing.
The time investment for volunteers and surveyed experts is minimal, as the surveys are designed to be completed in under 10 minutes and are not distributed frequently. The payoff for this initiative, however, is substantial, as it equips society and policymakers with a more solid foundation for decision-making.
